The mission of  Friends of the Montclair Township Animal Shelter (FOMTAS) is to help shelter animals and advance animal welfare through financial and program assistance, advocacy and education.

Since its founding in 2012, FOMTAS has:

-funded the remodel of the entire first floor of the Montclair Township Animal Shelter after a 2016 shelter fire
-funded the medical care and transfer fees of animals from high kill areas to local shelters for adoption
-funded the cost of medical care, supplies and equipment for shelter animals
-led animal welfare educational programs at libraries, schools and community organizations
-instituted childrens reading programs, "Paws to Read", to increase literacy in children and help socialize shelter animals
-run volunteer progams to engage community groups, such as senior citizens, persons with disabilities and students in the work of animal shelters and assist short-staffed shelters
-fundraised for the shelter through galas and grantwriting, and supported third parties interested in supporting shelters
-helped pass critical animal welfare legislation in the Township of Montclair and other New Jersey towns.
